2011 was a crazy year around here to say the very least, Last years popular call was my new wood duck call, They didn't lose any steam in 2011, They are still one of my best selling calls, What was interesting was the number of other folks that took a sudden interest in making wood duck calls, Guess it was an untapped market. Try as they might my calls just seem to get the job done and finish those woodies when the other guys calls let em swing through.

The Radio Show, Kelly Outdoors has just gone crazy, If listener ship is any consideration its more that tripled this past year. I give my guests and the willingness to overlook my shortcomings on the part of the listeners all the credit. The "Chat Room" during the show has almost become as fun as the show. The crew has way too much fun at times!! The first show of the year is Jan. 4th at 8pm CST. Its an all Kansas Show. Guests will all be from Kansas.

This past month we in the water fowling world lost two guys that did a lot for folks in their own way to make water fowling more enjoyable, Joe Jaroski and Bill Duncan. Several call makers from across the USA have decided to do something for these guys families. Early Teal season opened this past weekend and my son Hunter and my oldest daughter Lindsye found ourselves enjoying the Kansas sunrise near a small marsh wast of Hutchinson. We were the guest of the gents at Central Kansas Outfitters, www.centralkansasoutfitters.co The teal were flying fast and furious, Hunter had his first duck on the water right at legal shooting time, This was Hunters first duck hunt where he was allowed to shoot, Teal with a 20 gauge is no easy task, The boy had his limit in 20 minutes, I was one proud dad lemme tell ya. Jim and the guys at CKO did a great job of setting up and marking all of the downed birds. This was a hunt that we will not forget, Lindsye was toting a camera instead of a gun this hunt and got some awesome pics, You will be able to see some of them on the CKO web site. WOODIE CALLS aka Wood Duck Calls

Man I have to tell you when Kent Cullum of Hobo Calls http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hobo-World-Championship-Duck-Calls/155870142005called me to tell me that he won the first Team RealDuck http://www.teamrealduck.com/contest that he had every competed in using one of my Woodie calls I was jazzed. The idea for the Woodie call came to me in one of those "Eureka Moments" while driving one day, I came home and proceeded to try my idea out and shazaaaam, It was a winner. I sent Kent one of my calls to use in the contest and the rest is history. Since his win I have had several requests for the calls, Not setting any sales records but that will come around I am sure. Check out the three Woodies in the pics on here, Yep, Thats Ivory not acrylic on that African Blackwood Woodie................ Nice huh!!

Charlie Hess and Kevin Hampton

Seems like the world is just ripping by and not even thinking about slowing down. I lost two friends recently that were a big part of my call making business and also members of my group of buddies that loved this sport as much as I do. Charlie Hess and Kevin Hampton, Both were men that enjoyed the great outdoors to its fullest and LOVED waterfowling like few others ever do. They loved good calls and great conversations, Charlie, Kevin, You will be missed my friends.

Its been a long time since I posted here, Been busy but that's no reason to not do this. The radio show has been doing very well, Better than I had ever expected it to turn out. The call business is still plugging along. Noticed that I always seem to get a lot of requests to work on calls that need some TLC, Either repaired or refinished. So I guess now is as good as a time as any, Going to post the info out there that I do repair work on calls of any kind as long as they are wood. I do not work in acrylic and so that would be a great way for me to ruin a call or two. Anyway if you need some repair work done on your calls give me a ( dare I say it ?? ) a call or send me an email for more details, Retuning and refinishing all wooden calls. Well the web master has the sound files and so its just a matter of time before they are able to be listened to. There will be two new ReelFoot Style sound files, This is a metal reed call, FYI. There will also be some awesome sounding call work on a couple of timber style calls, These sound files were done by my friends Ronnie and Brent. Hey folks, Just a quick bit of info for you, My web site has been needing some serious make over for some time, Too much info and way too many pics makes it hard to enjoy, I think. The sound files were in need of serious updating as well, I have been able to get them redone by some of the finest callers in the country, These guys know about duck calls and goose calls, They can make them sing so you will be able to hear the full range of what these calls can do. NON Hunting issues warning, These are issues that are bugging me and not of a hunting/fishing/calling nature.

First of all, This current administration is leading us down the road to ruin. I dont give a crap if you like him or hate him I am just stating facts. The tired blame game of the " Previous Administration left us this mess" Crap is over. He is only doing this because he is a gutless worm afraid to answer for his own short comings. He also knows that the former president will not respond to his whiney azzzzz cry baby tactics, He is a better man than that,(GW that is). Second thing, North Korea, Enough is enough, oh yeah, Harsh sanctions from the UN really seem to work eh.??? Real effective on Iraq and Iran yes?? Oh maybe when we told Lybia off, Those all turned out real well huh, Whats it gonna take?? A mushroom cloud over Alaska?? You sick whimpy liberal bastards need to grow a set okay. Last but not least, Gitmo, Keep it open, put the lucky to still be breathing bastards in there. Let them stay there and die easy of good food and easy living. Giving these cork suckers the same rights as a uniformed soldier from a declared combative enemy is stupid, The folks that think this is a smart idea are in need of a front line tour of the real world in my opinion. Take your stupid carcass over there and see for yourself the real side of the "confused goat herder" thats only protecting his flock. Seriously, You folks better wake up and see whats real and whats just hype. Are you better off now than you were 6 months ago?? Are your friends and family?? Summer is here

Its official, The kids are out of school and its time for the fun that can only mean summer time, This year we are going to do the things that we have wanted to do for a long time, More river rafting trips, Some of the traditional white water runs we all just love and some of the lazy fishing ones I have always wanted to get the whole family into. New stuff, I am on facebook, Kelly Beltz, There is also 2 groups there about the radio show as well as my kalls, Its been an amazing experiance to say the least, My marketing guy suggested doing it and so I thought why not, BAM its all over the net now. Check it out if you have a chance. Going to keep this more current than I have, Just being lazy?? These next few weeks is going to be pretty exciting on my radio show, Going to have Doc Hull of Doc's calls on this coming Wednesday and the following week its going to be Joe Lares of JJ Lares calls of California. If you get a chance listen in, If I keep my yap shut they will have plenty of stories for all to enjoy.

Bird season here is pretty much over, Goose season wraps up this weekend, So its bunnies and trout for a bit until the spring turkey season rolls around. More on that later. Be good gotta blast. Kelly

Man, Life comes at ya fast these days, Finally getting all caught up on the calls I committed to make for various events around the USA, Sending a care package to the boys on the USS IWO JIMA in the Persian Gulf, Seems that they like to play with duck calls. 2009 was a banner year at Kellys Kalls, Sales went off the charts, The Radio show has done far better than I ever thought it would, In large part to you the readers of this blog and the folks on the Refuge web site. Please accept my thanks for your help in making this venture a success, Please continue to listen and tell your friends, Again, Can not say thank you enough. The guests that have been on have been a true blessing, All have been in the call making business in one way or another and have really brought some serious credentials to the show, You can find a link on here to find the shows that may interest you, Spring is coming and that means fishing and Turkey Hunting. Spring is my second most favorite time of the year, Everything is new and fresh. Life is breaking out all over the place and I love it, All of it except the snakes!!!! Copperheads love warm spring days and a silent turkey hunter snuggled up next to a big ol walnut tree is awfully warm to sit by, I have had more than my fair share of copperheads slide in to snuggle while turkey hunting, I really hate snakes !!! Thank goodness they are usually too sluggish to get nasty. Knock on wood. Gotta go, Be good all and I will be back soon.

Buck Fever

They grow them big here in Kansas, This one was arrowed in eastern Kansas a few weeks ago. There have been some huge deer taken this year so far. Rifle season opened up this past Wed. Runs for anouther week. The geese are stacking up all over the state right now, Hunter and I went out one day last week and got one bird but had a blast. Time spent with your children is a great investment in both the child and parent. These past few weeks have been super busy with Duck calls, Duck Whistles and a slew of Baby Mags, Lots of folks buying custom calls for friends and clients. I have to say I have some of the finest clients in the world, Many of you have become friends as well. I know I have said this before but I will say it again, Thank You, One and all. Christmas is almost here and as usual I am behind on my gifting. Some how or the other it all comes together at the final hour. Life is good

Ya know things have a way of getting stupid and then working themselfs out. This election is one of those I hope. Not an obama fan by any means and I just hope he does not get a real run at doing anything real stupid. He has a lot of questionable friends in the closet. ANYWAY, Duck seson here is in full swing as is bow season for deer and also upland birds. TO DATE I have not clipped a feather nor hair, Been busy with the Job, Kids, Wife and life. Been getting calls done in near record time this year, The key is to not allow a back log to happen. Once it does you always are playing catch up and that plan stinks. Lots of orders for whistles this year which is good. Not bragging but my Shotshell whistles are really cool, See pics above. Also lots of folks ordering Baby Mags for little ones. These little guys really are the cats azzzzzz. They make great gifts for any new hunter or huntress. There are some call companies that make "Born On" Calls, the thing is they all tend to look alike and are not really a one of a kind like the little Baby Mags are. I guess thats why folks love them. Good morning El Rushbo

Its a beauty of a morning here in Kansas, Its about 6:45 at this time and the sun is just starting to sneak up over the edge of the earth. These are the days I love, Cool crisp air and the whistle of wings on the wind. Call making has been really steady as of late, Go figure.............. The radio show is growing, Not by leaps and bounds but more like hops which is good, The whole idea was to build a base and see what happens.
Had a cool idea this past weekend and so I acted upon it, Decided to make a duck call that looks like a cigar, Rush Limbauge helps me pass the time out on my route and is always refering to cigars, What better name for my creation than El Rushbo. Its made of Bloodwood that has a really nice dark hue to it, The band is made of brass and its a double reed duck call. Only 4 1/2 inches long. The first one and the Original is going to be sent to Mr. Limbaugh as a gift. So Rush if you read this be watching for it in your mail box. Any way here is a pic, Hope you like it Rush.

Best time of the year

This has got to be the best time of the year!! All things outdoors are better when its cooler. Fall is a magical time of year for most of us, The things we enjoy doing and seeing are all starting to happen right now. Gotta love football, Would it be the same if it was played during the spring or summer?? Nope. Too hot and too many bugs................ Nothing makes you move faster than a big ol bug climbing around under your shirt except maybe a snake during Spring Turkey season that thinks your a pretty warm place to hang out. I will take bugs over copperheads any day!! Early teal season is here in full swing, Most are already gone because of the cooler weather but there are more birds on the way. The radio show is doing well and growing every week which is good. I am always on the look out for guest hosts to make the show more interesting to listeners, email me if you might be interested. Sept. 3rd is almost here and that's the first of what I hope is many radio shows to come. There is more to do to get ready for these than I ever thought possible. Its going to be a hoot though, Right now this week I am trying to line up some special guests for the show to demo duck and goose calling techniques, I am a pretty fair caller but we are talking world class callers here folks. These guys can make my calls sound pretty good and that's a feat in itself !! Never enough time

Its been crazy around here as of late, Trying to finish up calls for events, My son is playing football and thats three nights a week of practice, My day job just keeps getting more busy each and every day and will only get worse as we approach Christmas. Oh and yeah, Trying to get the time to do some work on my upcoming radio show. Only have a few calls for DU and Delta events left to go and then it gets real busy. Dove season opens here in Kansas on Sept. 1st. Boy I love to hunt those gray bullets ( notice I didnt say shoot) Talk about makin a guy humble about his shooting skills. If that wasnt bad enough early Teal season opens up about 2 weeks later for more chances to show case my shooting skills............... NOT. I should get birthday cards from shell makers, You guys at Federal reading this?? I will be posting some new call pics as they get done, There is a special Delta Waterfowl event in Omaha this next month, I have donated some goodies for the event. Its a fund raiser for some great kids up there. If your in the area its a great deal on a great evening of food and entertainment. Gotta go, You all be good.

Getting Done finally

Its been crazy here as of late, Trying to finish up all of my Ducks Unlimited fund raising calls and misc. calls that I have committed to this last month. The two above are a set of Arkansas style single reed duck calls headed for Oregon and the two below are a Duck call also Arkansas style single reed and a Goose call SR, That Lil baby is all of 4.25 inches long, These are headed to Green Bay Wisc. Got several more calls to finish up before the hunting season hits around here, So I will be hit and miss on here for the next few..........

Babys First Duck Call, Baby Mags & How it all Began

A few years ago I stood looking at a pile of cut offs from my call making efforts and was wondering what could I do with them, The wood is pretty expensive that us call maker types use so I really just didn't want to chuck it into the fire place on the patio.

My son Hunter was in Cub Scouts at the time and I thought I could make him a neckerchief slide out of some of that wood so it would look like a mini duck call. After it was done I got to thinking that making a real call of a very small size would be the coolest thing to try. Well after much trial and error I got the lil buggers figured out, Named them Baby Magnums or Baby Mags after the short shotgun shells used for water fowling during the 60's. One thing has led to another and now they are some of my best selling calls. Do not be fooled by the size, These calls have full size soundboards and reeds in them so they sound much bigger than they look. Folks have their children's names inscribed on them along with date of birth.

I have some folks that hunt with them and love them. Most are around 2 3/4 inches long, Some a bit longer but can also be made a bit shorter.
